TCIT Information

Teacher-Child Interaction Training (TCIT) is a classroom adaptation of PCIT that helps train teachers to better manage difficult students.  In October, 2011, the UC Davis CAARE Center & WestEd Center for Prevention & Early Intervention implemented a model of TCIT that was adapted from “Applying PCIT Concepts to Preschool Classrooms – A Guide Book” (2002) by Cheryl McNeil, PhD, West Virginia University, Amy Herschell, (MA) Ph.D., UC Davis Medical Center & Holly Filcheck, MA, West Virginia University.

This same model is used at Riverside County Department of Mental Health.  Information on this model was presented by Dr. Emma Girard, Psy.D. in September 2013 at the UC Davis-hosted 13th Annual Conference on Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for Traumatized Children: “Race & Culture Matter in PCIT” in Los Angeles, CA.  See PowerPoint slides here.

Providence Saint John’s Child and Family Development Center

Children with developmental disabilities, emotional challenges, encounters with domestic violence, substance or physical abuse receive assistance through one of the many programs and services offered at the Providence Saint John’s Child and Family Development Center (CFDC).  Our specially trained professional staff includes clinical social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, case managers, teachers and educational, occupational and speech therapists.  Services are provided within the center, on school sites, in the home and in the community.  Since 1962, we’ve been helping families at the Child and Family Development Center.  We offer families, adolescents and children safe, nurturing and confidential services that recognize our clients’ cultures and spoken languages.  Our programs focus on mental health, outreach and developmental educational needs.  We provide several early intervention programs for young children.  And, for those unexpected situations, we have a crisis intervention program that provides immediate care.

The Importance of Coding Competence for New PCIT Therapists

When learning coaching skills the trainee first learns to coach on a Level Two, labeling the parent’s verbalizations (especially PRIDE skills).  But, if they are not reliable coders, they won’t recognize the different verbalization categories, or won’t remember quickly enough, so won’t be able to label them out loud for the parent.   Read more

Susan & Deanna’s Coding Corner

“WOW!!!”  Is that an Unlabeled Praise or Parent Talk/Acknowledgement?  PCITers can spend a lot of time discussing these questions, so I thought I’d write up a little something for our coding corner on this:

Community Outreach: Relationship & Service

Yesterday I attended the Los Angeles County PCIT Learning Community Network meeting.  Dr. Lauren Maltby was facilitating a discussion with therapists currently in PCIT training (“Emerging” programs) on the topic of how to get more PCIT referrals.  I loved how Dr. Maltby conceptualized PCIT therapists’ efforts to connect with community organizations as a way to get the word out about PCIT, so I am paraphrasing her here:
